Team Building and Agile Software Development

Vasco Duarte, F-Secure

17:00 - 17:45 (45 minutes)

The software development field is stressful. Some accounts put the percentage of stress-related problems at 7% of all occupational health problems in the software industry. That’s a huge cost for software development companies in missed work-days and loss of productivity. Is software development more or less stressful with Agile software development methods? In this talk we’ll see an example of how a team took on a high-profile, potentially high-stress project at F-Secure, and was not only able to cope with the stress, but deliver a product to the market before the original deadline, and keep up their excellent morale. This talk explores how team building combined with Agile software development methods can work its magic even in the most difficult of situations.

Vasco Duarte

Currently a Product Manager at F-Secure, Vasco Duarte is an experienced project manager, having worked in the software development field since 1997. Vasco has also been an Agile Believer and Practicioner since 2004, he is one of the leaders and a catalyst in the adoption of Agile methods and Agile culture at F-Secure. Vasco’s humble contributions to the improvement of the software development profession can be read in his blog.

How Agile Works: Complexity and Agility

Joseph Pelrine, MetaProg

19:00 - 19:45 (45 minutes)

The use of so-called “Agile” methods such as eXtreme Programming and Scrum has helped many software projects to success, although it’s not always clear why and how. An understanding of the roots of agility, though, is is a requirement for adopting and adapting agile processes in organizations. New research in the field of social complexity theory provides an explanation for when and how agile methods work. By using techniques from this relatively new field, developers and managers can more easily adapt agile methods to the idiosyncracies of specific organizations and projects, are more aware of weak signals that can lead to problems, and can design interventions to correct them.

This talk provides a short introduction to social complexity theory, especially the Cynefin multi-ontological sense-making framework, and illustrates its application to agile software development.

Joseph Pelrine

Joseph Pelrine is C*O of MetaProg, a company devoted to increasing the quality of software and its development process, and is one of Europe’s leading experts on eXtreme Programming as well as Europe’s first certified ScrumMaster Practitioner and Trainer. He has had a successful career as software developer, project manager and consultant, and has spoken about it at such diverse places as IBM, OOPSLA and the Chaos Computer Club. His work focus is on field of social complexity and its application to Agile processes.

Joseph is also running a course on team dynamics in Helsinki on the 14th and 15th of March.
